ubiquitous \u2014 installed at nearly every home, store, hotel, shopping mall, and workplace in the US.<\/p><p>In the past few years, the question about EVs dominating U.S. roads shifted from \u201cIf?\u201d to \u201cWhen?\u201d And as I shared in the previous\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/acd-inc.com\/es\/blog\/electric-vehicles-by-the-numbers-past-present-and-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in this series, while sales grew gradually and modestly for much of the past decade, they doubled in 2021 over 2020, with EVs making up roughly 4.6% of new light passenger vehicle sales. True, less than five out of 100 doesn&#8217;t represent an inflection point. But that&#8217;s also up from 0% in 2010.<\/p><p>Furthermore, several factors point to a continuation of this robust trend in 2022. While EVs will not dominate U.S. roads by the end of the decade, they will see dramatic growth in market share and go mainstream.<\/p><p>The growth of EV charging is critical to this emerging reality, one that the federal government hopes to propel by investing $7.5 billion in public EV charging infrastructure, among other things. The investment is intended to put the U.S. &#8220;on the path to a convenient and equitable <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/12\/13\/fact-sheet-the-biden-harris-electric-vehicle-charging-action-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">network of 500,000 chargers<\/a><\/span> and make EVs accessible to all Americans for both local and long-distance trips,&#8221; the Administration announced in February.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d4370b0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d4370b0\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c7738bd\" data-id=\"c7738bd\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e936e06 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e936e06\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-xl\">Three Levels of EV Chargers<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ca7d4bb elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"ca7d4bb\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3160327\" data-id=\"3160327\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-feff453 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"feff453\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>EV chargers are categorized by three different levels, or ranges of power:<\/p><ul><li>Level 1 utilizes a common household 120-volt outlet. This typically provides about two to four miles of range for every hour of charging, depending on the EV. The vast majority of Level 1 charging is done at people\u2019s homes or apartments.<br \/>Level 2, the workhorse of EV chargers, draws from the kind of 240-volt outlet used with clothes dryers, and can top off an EV about five times faster than a Level 1.<\/li><li>Level 2 charging is common where cars are parked for at least a few hours or overnight, such as at hotels, shopping malls, parking lots, and workplace locations. At the end of 2021, in the U.S. there were nearly 92,000 public Level 2 chargers installed at located at more than 33,000 locations.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC), also referred to as Level 3, is the fastest charging speed, capable of charging an all-electric vehicle, a.k.a. a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) to 80 percent in just 20 minutes to one hour. How fast a BEV can add, say a few hundred miles, varies by many factors, including the power (measured in kilowatts) of the charger, the maximum charging capability of the EV, the state of charge of the battery (e.g. 20% charged versus 50%), the outside temperature and other factors. Approximately 24,000 of these were DC fast chargers, according to data from the U.S. Dept. of Energy.\n \nGrowth of all types of chargers over time has fared well. From 2010 through the end of 2021, the total number of public charging ports increased to more than 114,000 from just 900. And during the years 2013 through 2021, the average annual increase in total charging ports was 27%.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) sold since 2010 \u2014 has ranged from a low of 17.3 to one in 2020, to 19.0 to one in 2021. One note: More and more people will have access to residential refueling as charger installations at multifamily housing increases. Thus, ratios are a moving target. For one thing, PHEVs, which currently account for roughly one-third of the EVs on the road in the U.S., cannot use DC fast chargers (except for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV). Furthermore, Level 2 chargers are far less expensive and typically easier to install than DC fast chargers, which can cost from a low of about 5 to more than 50 times that of Level 2 to
